Stop running away from your injuries during Marathon training

With less than three months to go until the London Marathon, Earlsfield's Philippa Crabb from ProPhysiotherapy shares her advice on how sometimes the most debilitating injuries that prevent training and marathon success, can be avoided with the most simple and effective solutions.

There are numerous physical and psychological benefits to running, making it a globally popular sport and form of exercise. Training for a Marathon can be gruelling, especially if you are training through the winter, but it can also be fun and injury free. Unfortunately, injuries from running are a common occurrence affecting runners of varying ages and ability. Injuries don’t always have to bring your training to a halt – as long you know how to manage them and are following the correct advice.

The main complaints that we see here at ProPhysiotherapy, brought about from marathon training, are:

  • Runner’s knee

  • Shin splints

  • Achilles tendonitis

  • Stress fractures

Running exerts and puts pressure on the bones and soft tissues of the body, especially in the lower limbs – in order to cope with the strain of the physical demands of running, the body needs to build strength. Sometimes the simplest remedies are the best- and in this case it is stretching! The best way to do this is to stretch sufficiently before and after exercise. It is important for runners to build up their strength gradually and, if you have invested your time in doing so through stretching, you will be more likely recover fully from any injuries that may delay training.

Other preventative measures include the following:

  • Warming up sufficiently before exercising

  • Stretch thoroughly post exercise

  • Ensuring you run in the correct footwear

We see so many determined and ambitious patients at our clinic who have become disheartened during their Marathon training and, although each case is slightly different, we are able to provide effective treatment which can have you back out running in no time! We know what a huge commitment it is to do a marathon, so with the right help hopefully we can get you back out there in no time!
