Earlsfield Talks: To Cremoloso Gelato

Elisa, welcome to Earlsfield Talks, please tell us a bit about yourself:

I’m from Genova and my husband is from Alessandria, but we lived 12 years on lake Maggiore in Piedmont, Italy. It's close to Switzerland and a lovely place to live. For many reasons it is also similar to the UK- it rains a lot! We moved to England a few years ago to restart our lives in a vibrant economy, because unfortunately Italy's struggles in this regard are well known. We landed in 2015 and invested two years learning the English language and also understanding the new laws and British ways of life.

Gelato has always been an important part of our lives and we started developing our flavours almost 5 years ago in Italy. It makes us happy every day. After years of planning (and a bit of dreaming!), we finally we opened on 29th April last year. We consider ourselves incredibly lucky because, to us, it is the most beautiful job in the world!

Cremoloso gelato is delicious- what is the secret to achieving this?

As my Grandmother used to say "You need to choose the best quality products, that's 50%, the rest is sweat and love!"

We are so pleased you love our gelato, we make it in the shop in Earlsfield from scratch each day, using all fresh ingredients and spending lots of time experimenting with new flavours and combinations. It's a real passion of ours and we are so pleased to share it with the Earlsfield community.

How do you choose your suppliers?

The most important factor for us is the quality of the products, so this makes up about 70% of the decision as we do not compromise in quality. The remainder is actually more about gut-feeling because it is important to have a personal and trusted relationship with suppliers that you like and respect. Normally our suppliers are small and often are family businesses like us. It's really important to support independent and growing suppliers.

We have recently become a supplier ourselves! As we have entered into a partnership with Home Community Café on Garratt Lane (and Tara Theatre).

What drove you to create your business in Earlsfield?

Since moving from Italy, we've really enjoyed living in Earlsfield. It's very family orientated and we love meeting all of the local families and their children. It was the obvious place for us. We do love this area, and can see it improving day by day, that's why we wanted to produce our Gelato here.

What difference does/can your business make to the community?

As an Italian family, we love being around people around are always available for our neighbours. We really enjoy having Cremoloso involved in events, like local street parties, or Halloween evenings or Christmas concerts. Very recently, we took part Street Party in Vanderbuilt road to honour the Royal wedding, making the traditional English pudding into an "Eton Mess" gelato!

What are the best part of your job?

Easy answer, the best part is to see our little younger guests run to the gelato counter to choose their favourite flavours. Hearing their happiness when they pop in the shop is really priceless.......

What are your biggest challenges?

Our biggest challenge is to become as environmentally friendly as possible and fight the disposable cup issue. More than 2.5bn takeaway coffee cups are used and thrown away each year. We have just started a simple initiative- when you come home from work (we are open until 9pm), drop off your reusable coffee cup. We will to wash it for you, and keep it overnight, then in the morning we will fill it with fresh delicious coffee for an agreed time for you to pick up on your way to work. That's it! No extra charge due, just the standard price of the coffee that you enjoy.

Who or what has inspired you?

I think that there's a mix of things, not just one. First of all- our families, not just our parents but all of our family. We are always in pursuit of the beauty of tasty food and there is plenty of inspiration from our families here. For example, we look to auntie Maria because her lasagne is the best, or remember happy times gathered at Piero's house because his tiramisù is unbeatable. That is what 's inspired us all our life and what we want to bring to our customers, an explosion of taste and memories!

What advice would you give your younger self?

Enjoy what is happening right now because these fabulous moments go so quickly.
